Project Description
More than 80,000 Syrian refugees are currently living in Jordan’s Za’atari refugee camp. Anyone born after 2012 has never seen beyond the camp’s walls. It is now classed as Jordan’s fourth largest city.
Many of the camp’s inhabitants are subject to incredibly horrific living conditions—poverty-fuelled crime, food scarcity, dust storms, and limited access to water means conditions at the camp are often life-or-death.
The Desert Garden, initiated by the University of Sheffield, has trained over 4,000 refugees to cultivate their own food through hydroponic systems that are fruitful even in the harsh camp environment. This means that every human at the camp will have constant access to fresh food.
We require your help to support the initiative’s growth, taking it to a commercial level where the camp’s inhabitants can move to a nascent farming cooperative, where the program will be entirely self-sufficient.
How does your donation help?
We’re raising £150k for the Desert Garden.
Donations made to the project enable the University of Sheffield to construct eight new greenhouses, provide development costs and support the growth of the Desert Garden for two years, at which point the camp will become self-sustaining.
Your support helps in the following ways:
— Year 1: £128,000 — Covers installation costs (land preparation, hydroponics, greenhouses, electrical and plumbing, pesticides, water tanks, control room, interior fit-out), operational costs (utilities, land rent, work force salaries) and support costs.
— Year 2: £23,000 — Covers operational costs (utilities, land rent, work force salaries) and support costs.
A full breakdown of costs is listed below.
